Nevertheless, in 1963 plans for the production of three high-speed research aircraft were approved and construction proceeded. In September 1964 the first Valkyrie, now re-coded A/V-1, took to the air for the first time and in October went supersonic. This book is the most detailed description of the design, engineering and research that went into this astounding aircraft. It is full of unpublished details, photographs and firsthand accounts from those closely associated with the project. The story of the XB-70 is interwoven with Cold War history, politics, science and aerodynamics, engineering, and international rivalry. The author does a good job of covering each element, and educating the reader. I learned a lot!Although the book is said to be simple enough for the average layman reader, I think it would lose most non-engineering readers partway through. I found the vast majority of the technical descriptions to be accurate, and not too complicated, but it did get pretty deep into the weeds with the description of the data acquisition system and telemetry, and the detailed descriptions and evaluations of the flight checklists. About the only technical flaw I observed was in the authors assessment of the skin wrinkles and core disbonds seen on AV-1 in the Air Force Museum; a proper explanation needs the language of a structural engineer.I greatly enjoyed the history associated with the B-70’s procurement, the other airplane developments going on all around it, Washington and Military politics, and the comparisons with the SR-71 Blackbird (A-12) and Sukhoi T-4. I learned about the tensions between the XB-70 project and the Concord and ill-fated American SST project, and Mac the Knife and his Whiz Kids. I never connected the airplane designation numbering sequence between the XB-70 and the SR-71 until I read this book.The author, being British, seems to harbor a bit of grudge for the American government animus toward the Concord project. The Concord was indeed a fantastic airplane, but I’m afraid that McNamara got it right regarding the lack of economic viability for supersonic passenger travel, a lesson that was learned the hard way (but at least vicariously) via Concord. The author failed to include this tidbit of truth.The development of this airplane was fantastically expensive, and yet it was amazing to read how complicated technical problems were solved in a relatively short time (before the age of digital computers). What a monumental effort! Yet the development of no other commercial airliner in this country has been subsidized by the US government as if the design and product would be the property of the US government (like a military airplane). The author might have explained how this would have worked if the American SST (by Boeing) had gone forward.I think Ben Rich in his book about Lockheed’s Skunk Works offered a bit more insight into why McNamara killed the XB-70. Stealth technology was emerging about this time, and the advance in missile technology was going to render all non-stealthy bomber designs impotent. The F-111 and the B-1 ran into this. The F-117A and the B-2 are subsonic designs, but now proven to have overwhelming advantage in battle.A truly informative book, and I’m glad to say that AV-1 is today readily seen in the Air Force Museum.
